Shona Sculpture

Today Zimbabwe stone sculpture, an internationally acclaimed art form, is under enormous pressure from raging countrywide crisis. Inflation rises daily to unheard of rates as the population continues to fall further into poverty. Harare now reports cholera contracted by desperate people drinking contaminated water. Citizens are dying from eating poisonous plants to try to ward off starvation. Because there is not money for seeds and fertilizer, planting will not occur this year.Vanishing tourism as well as unwillingness of many art dealers to go back until the situation changes is forcing artists to sell the sculptures at giveaway prices just to get money to buy bare necessities. And often it’s not enough to buy stone to make the next piece. Some go for months without selling a single sculpture.

Don and Joan have never haggled for a piece of art because it is reasonable enough without trying to pay less. You can be completely assured that all pieces at our gallery are bought at the US rate at a fair price. This is why when you buy art at Gossamer Gallery you’re also passing on a little foreign money to help.
